Cannabidiol is a chemical compound found in Cannabis sativa plant, commonly known as marijuana. While, THC which is another compound found abundantly in Cannabis is used for its “high” effect, cannabidiol (CBD) gives the user’s many health benefits. Read below to find out how it works.
What is Cannabidiol (CBD)?
The Cannabis plant is responsible for producing over 60 chemical compounds in which THC and CBD are the most common and well studied.
When marijuana is grown for recreational purposes, the THC levels are higher than CBD. However, the levels vary between plants and breeding techniques. Some skilled growers have now managed to grow cannabis plants that have higher levels of CBD and no trace of THC allowing the users to enjoy the health benefits of marijuana without getting “high”.
Cannabidiol is non-psychotic and clinical studies have established it as a safe and well-tolerated drug. Although, THC and CBD are both derived from the same plant, CBD doesn’t act on the same pathway as the former. To explain further, THC acts on the highly concentrated CB1 receptors which can create mind-altering effects. But Cannabidiol works in a complete different way.
FDA has also acknowledged cannabidiol as a new dietary supplement and doctors all across America are studying it for its medical benefits.
Advantages of using Cannabidiol:
Cannabidiol is full of many health benefits. A2013 study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology showed that Cannabidiol has the following medical properties.
- Antiemetic – are effective in reducing nausea and vomiting
- Anticonvulsant – are drugs that are used to prevent and reduce the severity of seizures. It has also been associated with reducing chronic pain
- Antipsychotic – medicines are mainly used to treat schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders
- Anti-inflammatory – Helps reduce and prevent inflammation in the body
- Anti-oxidant – a substance that helps ward off neurodegenerative diseases
- Anti-cancer – Regular intake of CBD helps lower the risk of cancer and other tumors
- Anti-depressant – helps reduce anxiety and treat depression
Furthermore, CBD helps protect the users from being high after inhaling THC. Various studies have established that CBD reduces the effects of marijuana such as memory impairment and sleepiness. CBD is also known to create more mental awareness.
Side Effects of using CBD:
Dozens of studies have proven that cannabidiol is effective for a number of conditions. It is also considered safe and free from harmful side effects. It has also been established that humans can easily tolerate up to 1,500 mg per day of CBD without any concerns about fluctuating heart rate, pressure, and body temperature.
Unfortunately, most of these studies have been conducted on animals with only a few being carried out on humans. Since each person is different and the medical benefits of CBD are still under research, it is important to do thorough investigation before including cannabidiol in regular routine.
How to use CBD?
The research is still underway about the proper use of Cannabidiol which is why most doctors hesitate to prescribe CBD. Those who manage to get hold of CBD can take it orally as drops or concentrated paste. Other ways to take it is through capsules, vapors, edibles such as chocolate, and even as creams, lotions, and skin strips.
The correct dosage of CBD depends on the disease and the preparation method. Again, since each individual and symptoms are different, it is best to discuss the dosage with the prescribing doctor or health care provider.
Cannabidiol and Pets:
Since dogs and cats are affected by the same illnesses as humans, most pet owners are questioning the effects CBD can have on their furry friends.
Evidence proves that CBD can provide relief to sick animals – when given the dosed accurately. It is also a good alternative to harsh medicines that can affect the wellbeing of animals. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, CBD is helpful in treating pain, seizures, inflammation and digestive issues in animals. It also creates a soothing effect which results in appetite gain, better sleep, and more energy for the animals.
According to a survey, more than 90% of pet owners approved of CBD infused treats for their pets. Most of them agreed that only 1-2 drops of CBD oil per 10 pet pounds daily improved the quality of life for their pet immensely.
Is CBD legal?
Although, CBD is showing a lot of positive promises – it is still illegal in most parts of the world. As of march 17, 2016, 16 states have approved the use of CBD oil. These include:
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
Cannabidiol is illegal and classified as Schedule II Drug in Canada and Schedule I Drug in America. Canada also has a growing policy in order for CBD. Marijuana plants that have THC content lower than 0.03% are known as hemp which is legal to grow in Canada.
On the other hand, the FDA has approved the request by GW Pharmaceuticals to start a trial of medicine for children suffering from epilepsy. The drug known as Epidiolex contains 98 % Cannabidiol and 0 traces of THC.
GW Pharmaceuticals has also produced another CBD based medicine by the name of Sativex. Approved in more than 24 countries worldwide, the Sativex is formulated to treat multiple sclerosis.
It has also been observed that many online vendors are selling dietary supplements claiming them to be made from hemp. The nutritional supplement companies are not regulated by the FDA and consumers are freely purchasing CBD from these vendors. However, investigation has shown that the online versions of CBD contain more CBD content and very few traces of THC.
Regardless of all the above information, it can be safely stated that benefits of cannabidiol are being researched all over the world. Day by day, states are also passing the bill on using CBD for medical purposes. It is probable that in a few years, CBD oil will become legal all over the world.
